Libreville, Sunday February 4, 2024 (Infos Gabon) – Hage Geingob died this Sunday at the age of 82 from cancer.
Namibia has been in mourning since the announcement early this Sunday morning of the death of the President of the Republic. Hage Geingob died at the age of 82 from cancer. “It is with the greatest sadness and regret that I inform you that our beloved Dr. Hage G. Geingob, the President of the Republic of Namibia, passed away today,” announced on the social network Twitter) Nangolo Mbumba, previously vice-president and new interim head of state.
An anti-apartheid activist from a young age, Hage G. Geingob was a major figure in the independence of this southern African country then dominated by Southern Africa. Even during the many years spent in exile, he continued to campaign for access to sovereignty for his country. A fight which would eventually bear fruit in 1989 with the country’s accession to independence. He returned home to occupy the post of Prime Minister at the age of 48. He left an indelible mark on his fifteen-year tenure in this role. Elected President of the Republic in 2014, Hage G. Geingob will be re-elected in 2019.
Across the continent, his counterparts are celebrating a visionary leader. For Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, the deceased “was a veteran of the liberation of Namibia from colonialism and apartheid. He was also very influential in the solidarity shown by the people of Namibia to the people of South Africa so that we could be free today. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu bowed to the memory of “a dear brother, a venerable Pan-Africanist”. William Ruto remembers a leader who “believed in a unified Africa and strongly defended the voice and visibility of the continent on the world stage”. For his part, the Somali Hassan Sheikh Mohamud remembers “a respected voice on the African continent”. While the Burundian Evariste Ndayishimiye speaks of “the great loss of a visionary leader”.
