Drøbak Explosion Linked to Gang Warfare in Sweden: Attempted Murder Suspects Arrested

The explosion went off at a house in a residential area in Drøbak on the night of Tuesday 24 October. No one was injured in the explosion, but there was extensive material damage.

The police suspected early on that it was a settlement in a local criminal environment, but soon turned their suspicions towards an internal settlement in environments with branches abroad.

The police have stated that they link the Drøbak explosion to crime in Sweden. According to the police, the bomb used in Drøbak was similar to the bombs that have been used during several attacks in Sweden, in connection with the bloody gang war in the Foxtrot network.

– Lives could have been lost

Three of the accused are from Sweden, one of them a woman. The fourth accused is a Norwegian in his 20s. He was arrested in Sweden on 30 January together with the woman, while the other two were arrested on 1 February.

On Wednesday, Follo and Nordre Østfold District Court decided to remand the man for two weeks. However, he appealed the decision and won in the Eidsivating Court of Appeal.

All those arrested are charged with attempted murder or complicity in this.

– The case is being investigated as attempted murder. The bomb was placed in such a way that lives could easily have been lost, in addition to the material damage, says prosecutor Grete Bollestad to Dagbladet.

She adds:

– The Swedish men are 19 years old, and this week stood accused of arson in a trial in Sweden. But I have not had access to that matter, she says.

Background conflict

The police believe so far in the investigation to have formed a picture of a possible motive. They state that part of the investigation has recently taken place in Sweden.

– We have formed a picture of a possible underlying conflict that accumulates in this explosion, says Bollestad.

The police state that the investigation has so far been complicated, partly because those involved use large resources to hide their criminal activities, but also because the police – in their opinion – are dealing with cross-border crime

Going forward, the investigation will concentrate on clarifying the roles of the accused, as well as charting the actual conditions, Bollestad says.
