WASHINGTON – Nearly a week after drone strike in Jordan that killed three US soldiers, retaliatory strikes against backed militias Iran has begun.

The attack had been expected for several days, and in the interim, the Biden administration began facing questions and criticism from Republicans about the timing and strength of the US response.

But foreign policy experts believe the approach allows Iran to withdraw its personnel, thereby potentially avoiding a broader conflict between the US and Iran.

“This would allow them to reduce the capacity of Iran-backed militias to attack US forces, but not escalate them,” Mick Mulroy, former deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Middle East, told the BBC. “Though this is unlikely to be a deterrent to future attacks.”

The main benefit, he said, is “avoiding outright war” between the US and Iran.

The US attacked the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and affiliated militias in Iraq and Syria, at seven locations in total. The bombers hit 85 individual targets

“Let everyone who wants to hurt us know this: If you hurt Americans, we will respond,” said President Joe Biden.
