Live US Elections | Biden easily wins the first Democratic primary in South Carolina

Biden easily wins first Democratic primary election

President Joe Biden has won the first Democratic primary in the state of South Carolina by a clear margin, American news channels report.

Biden, who counts on an important black electorate in the conservative southern state, won the primary against two other candidates. According to the most recent projections, he would receive 97 percent of the votes, his competitors Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson would have to make do with 2 and 1 percent.

In South Carolina, 55 electoral votes were at stake. A candidate needs about 2,000 in total to win the Democratic election.

The smooth win is a boost for 81-year-old Biden. After the primary election, he estimated his chances of beating Donald Trump in November to be high. “In 2024, the people of South Carolina have spoken again and I have no doubt that you have put us on the path to another presidential victory and another defeat for Donald Trump,” he said in a statement.
