We do not yet know the circumstances of the tragedy which played out near the Loon-Plage camp, in the North. A migrant died during the night from Saturday to Sunday “as a result of a gunshot wound”, after being “found, still alive, on the banks of the A16, in the town of Grande-Synthe then transported to the “hospital,” said Dunkirk prosecutor Charlotte Hutet. “According to the first elements of the investigation, this man resided in a migrant camp near the place where he was found,” she said. “His identity is being confirmed.”
An open investigation
A second person, who also resided in this camp according to the first elements, was injured, without his life threatening, adds the prosecutor. According to a police source, this injured man is a 33-year-old Iraqi, who was hit by a bullet in the hand.
This same source indicates that the deceased man was shot in the chest. An investigation was opened, entrusted to the Judicial Police. No arrests have taken place at this stage.
Claire Millot, from the Salam association, which helps exiles in the camps in this area, estimates the number of people currently living there at 500 to 600.
