Pediatric Orthopedic Doctor Iurie Antoci Explains Important Milestones in a Baby’s Physical Development

The first year of a child’s life is marked by significant physical and psychological development. Each stage is associated with a new skill.

Iurie ANTOCI, ORTHOPEDIC DOCTOR-TRAUMATOLOGIST PEDIATRIC: “In the first month, there will be elements of motor skills, that is, the child actively moves his hands, feet, and fingers clenched into fists. At the 2-3rd month, the cervical tonic reflex appears. At 4 months, the child holds his head well. Around 6 months with a range of up to 8 months, the child starts to sit on the bottom. The wilderness takes place between 7-10 months, these are the first expeditions or escapades on your own”.

By the age of 8 months, the child begins to walk in fours and makes the first attempts to stand. And around the age of one year, he takes his first steps unsupported.

Iurie ANTOCI, ORTHOPEDIC DOCTOR-TRAUMATOLOGIST PEDIATRIC: “Of course, all periods of physical development are very important, but I would draw attention to parents to be more vigilant in the first 3 months of life.”

Iurie ANTOCI, ORTHOPEDIC DOCTOR-TRAUMATOLOGIST PEDIATRIC: “From the first days, we draw attention to the visual external physical appearance, the shape of the head, neck, chest, upper and lower limbs, movement in the joints. Parents could identify visually at the beginning, for example, a congenital torticollis”.

This condition, characterized by the inclined position of the head, must be differentiated from muscular torticollis, which does not require treatment.

Iurie ANTOCI, ORTHOPEDIC DOCTOR-TRAUMATOLOGIST PEDIATRIC: “Often, mothers worry that the soles are positioned inwards. This physiological platfos or soft foot can be up to 4 years old, it’s something physiologically normal”.

Some positioning of the legs, such as in x or parenthesis, can also be considered normal up to a certain age.

Iurie ANTOCI, ORTHOPEDIC DOCTOR-TRAUMATOLOGIST PEDIATRIC: “Hip dysplasia is a development defect of the hip joint. In the event that the head of the femoral bone is undeveloped and can make a partial or total dislocation, that is, it can be a subluxation or total dislocation”.

The absence of timely treatment leads to the progressive worsening of the pathology, that is why it is good to pay attention to the signs of this condition.

Osteoarticular development can also be affected by mistakes made involuntarily by parents. We will list some of the most common ones.

Iurie ANTOCI, ORTHOPEDIC DOCTOR-TRAUMATOLOGIST PEDIATRIC: “Forcing the sitting position, I strongly do not recommend to parents that the child should sit it up to 6 months. Between the vertebrae is a cartilage that is at the beginning of development, and in adult life it is possible to have health problems”.

Using the wrong walker or baby carrier also affects the development of the osteoarticular system. Another mistake is forcing the walk.

Iurie ANTOCI, ORTHOPEDIC DOCTOR-TRAUMATOLOGIST PEDIATRIC: “Walking is from 10-11 months, up to 1.4-1.6 months if there are no orthopedic problems. We believe that we teach children to walk, the child learns only on his own. From the start, the child’s walk will strive to be barefoot”.

There is a myth that orthopedic footwear is necessary for the correct development of the child’s foot. Footwear has only the role of protection, and the doctor gives us advice on how to choose it correctly.

Iurie ANTOCI, ORTHOPEDIC DOCTOR-TRAUMATOLOGIST PEDIATRIC: “The first and most important thing: the sole should be maximally flexible. Two, the back part, the carambola, should again be flexible, that is, it should not hold the ankle. The ankle must roll, move. We don’t buy with cushions, heels, insoles, which reduce the flexibility of the sole”.

Another current problem is the excessive use of gadgets, which limits the baby’s movement and physical activity and diminishes the interest in exploration.
