The State Chamber Orchestra broadcasts live from the Great Guild Sinfonietta Riga and the concert of Jērgas Vidmanis, the new artistic partner of the orchestra!
In the program: Felix Mendelssohn’s Fifth Symphony in E minor, op. 107 (“Reformations”), Jērgas Vidmanis “The Art of Fugue” (Try over the joint) for soprano, oboe and chamber orchestra, in which the soloist is Inga Kalna, as well as Féliks Mendelszon / Jērga Vidmaņa Andante from Sonata for clarinet and piano in E flat major. Let us remind you that already yesterday the same program, crowned with a standing ovation, was played in Liepaja concert hall “Lielais dzintars”.
In between – a conversation with the State Chamber Orchestra Sinfonietta Riga artistic director Normund Schneas well as the main guest of the evening Jērgu Vidmani. On the other hand, tomorrow morning at 9.30 in “Klasika” Inga Saksone’s interview with the world-famous Latvian soprano will be broadcast Ingu Kalnu.
Latvian Radio 3 Klasika director Governor of Gunda: “It is very important that one of the greatest musicians of the 21st century – clarinetist, composer and conductor Jērgs Vidmanis, who is currently also the composer-in-residence of the Berlin Philharmonic, has recently been visiting Latvia so often and will be the artistic partner of the State Chamber Orchestra Sinfonietta Rīga.
He writes music in the widest range: both large-scale works – such as operas and vocal symphonic opuses – as well as chamber music. They are technologically very complex – Vidmani is even called an instrumentation fetishist, but it is important that emotionality is always present in his music. As he himself says: “Everything starts from the soul.” And the audience can’t help but feel it.
A very beautiful episode in the life of Jērgas Vidmanis is connected with our great Maestro Maris Jansons… At that time, the Maestro was the artistic director of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and in 2008 a whole cycle was dedicated to Beethoven’s music. The idea was that each of the concerts also includes a piece of contemporary music as a reference to Beethoven’s symphonies.
[Kādu dienu] The phone is ringing for Jērgas Vidmanis. The caller is Maris Jansson, who invites Jörg to write music inspired by Beethoven’s Seventh and Eighth Symphonies. The composer is very active at that time, but it is impossible to refuse Maris Jansons, and so he starts writing his concert piece – Concert Overture – at a great pace With vivacity.
Not much time passes, the concert must take place and rehearsals must begin, but the score is not yet available.
Three days before the rehearsal, Mariss Jansons calls Jörgs Vidmans again: “Where are you?” “Will be!” There is no score yet, but the piece is important and very complex, and Maris Jansson says: “In that case you have to conduct the rehearsal yourself – I can’t conduct it!” Jērgs Vidmanis came to the Bavarian Radio Orchestra and conducted a perfect rehearsal… Mariss Jansons was so moved by his personality!
He himself, of course, brilliantly conducted the concert afterwards, but from that moment their friendship began. And in fact, Jērgas Vidmanis’s brilliant career as a conductor also began…”
One of the most brilliant trump cards of Jērgas Vidmanis is the ability to exist in multifacetedness. He regularly collaborates with the best orchestras and chamber musicians, works inspiringly with students and is also perfectly comfortable in the role of a conductor. Vidmanis’ suggestive clarinet playing enchants with passionate musicality and unusual natural lightness, and his multi-layered compositions include such greats as Andris Nelsons, Pāvo Jervi and Simon Rattles in their concert programs.
The charismatic musician will also devote the next three years to work with “Sinfonietta Rīga”, becoming the orchestra’s artistic partner and continuing the warm cooperation started in 2014 in several high-level concerts.
