Referee reports homophobic chants and fan misconduct at Atlético-MG x Cruzeiro game

Os homophobic screams targeting Rafael Cabral and the throwing of objects and food onto the MRV Arena lawn did not go unnoticed in referee Paulo César Zanovelli’s summary. The referee FIFA listed all the events of the game in the document of the classic for the Campeonato Mineiro.

Atlético-MG x Cruzeiro: fans chant homophobic chants aimed at Rafael Cabral

Zanovelli cited the homophobic chant at the time of Rafael Cabral’s goal kick in the 26th minute of the first half.

– I inform you that, in the 26th minute of the first half, when the goalkeeper of the Cruzeiro Esporte Clube team, Mr. Rafael Cabral Barbosa, went to take a goal kick, the Clube Atlético Mineiro fans chanted homophobic chants saying the following words “faggot” – quoted the referee.

Afterwards, Zanovelli narrated the throwing of objects and food towards the lawn. According to him, 35 minutes into the first half, “a glass containing yellow liquid was thrown onto the playing field, not hitting anyone taking part in the match.”

The referee also mentioned that in the goals scored by Cruzeiro, in the 36th and 40th minutes of the second half, “several glasses with yellow and transparent liquids were thrown towards the players of this team, however they did not reach the aforementioned athletes”.

At 40 minutes into the second half, according to Zanovelli, “a Styrofoam lunchbox containing food (rice and tropeiro beans) was thrown onto the playing field, which fell close to assistant referee number 2, Celso Luiz da Silva, but did not reaching him.” According to the summary, “at the end of the match, some glasses, with the same liquids mentioned above, were thrown onto the playing field, however, not hitting anyone participating in the match.”

In recent years, the Superior Court of Sports Justice has punished clubs involved in homophobic chants by fans in the stands. Clubs can even be punished with loss of points.

Cruzeiro himself was reported for a similar situation in 2022, during a game against Grêmio. At the time, he reached an agreement with STJD, paying a fine and carrying out awareness campaigns. The team played the rest of that season with a captain’s banner alluding to the colors of the LGBTQIA+ movement.
