Jakarta –
Karolina Shiino’s win at the Miss Japan pageant continues to spark deep controversy. Because Karolina is of Ukrainian descent, her ‘Japanese’ identity was questioned and received criticism.
Legally, Karolina is the rightful winner because she obtained Japanese citizenship last year. Even so, the debate continues and the Miss Japan organization is criticized regarding its definition of true Japanese beauty.
“The person chosen as Miss Japan is very beautiful. However, I define Miss Japan as someone whose beauty represents the Japanese people. She does not meet that definition; her beauty is different from Japanese beauty,” said Japanese manga writer Mayumi Karuta in X.
Karolina’s ‘caucasian’ face with typical Caucasian skin sparked the views of several people who felt that her beauty did not reflect genuine Japanese beauty. In this context, Japan is not only a citizenship status, but also embraces the concept of ethnicity involving shared cultural heritage, language and history.

Karolina Shiino moved to Japan when she was five years old. At that time he moved with his mother who married a Japanese.
For the past 20 years he has grown up in Japan. Karolina claims that all this time she has lived like a Japanese person by adopting the existing culture.
“I live as a Japanese person, but there are racial barriers and there are many instances where I am not accepted,” Shiino said in Japanese on his social media.
Karolina hopes that people can see inside her, it’s not just physical. On the beauty competition’s website, Karolina wrote that although she looks like a foreigner, she has a Japanese spirit.
