Thus Bilal Ilyas Jhandir trained for 13 weeks to memorize the words of the entire catalog of his idol. And he broke the record by identifying 34 songs by the singer in less than a minute.
To set the record, he was tasked with completing the verses, blindfolded on camera, while a pair of certified witnesses read aloud snippets of lyrics from a randomly selected list of songs and a stopwatch counted down the seconds.
An intense memorization exercise, but the difficulty was not where you might think, the 20-year-old told USA Today from his home in Bahawalpur, Pakistan:
“It was very difficult because you had to listen to another person reading the lyrics and they would pronounce some words incorrectly.”
Bilal Ilyas Jhandir shot the video of himself in September 2023 and the Cuinness Book of Records team verified his feat this month.
The previous record holder was Briton Dan Simpson, who in 2019 managed to identify 27 Taylor songs in the same period of time.
While Bilal Ilyas Jhandir, whose favorite song to star in is You’re Losing Me, is happy with his win, there’s one other thing he’d like even more: seeing Taylor Swift in person. “My only dream right now is to meet her,” he said. Or, at the very least, to participate in a stop on the Eras tour. »
