Family of Britney Evans Expresses Compassion for Scarlett Jenkinson and Tribute to Brianna’s Mother
UK News
The family of Britney Evans, the 15-year-old found guilty of the “brutal” murder of Brianna Ghey, has expressed profound remorse for their daughter’s actions while also paying tribute to Brianna’s mother, Esther Ghey, for her empathy and selflessness during the trial and aftermath.
Brianna Ghey, 16, was the victim of a chilling attack orchestrated by Evans and her accomplice, Eddie Ratcliffe, also 15 at the time, last year in February. In a sentencing described by the Crown Prosecution Service as “one of the most disturbing cases,” Evans was handed a minimum of 22 years in prison while Ratcliffe received a 20-year sentence.
Despite the shocking nature of the events that unfolded, the family of Evans expressed their condolences to Brianna’s family in a heartfelt statement, ending a year of unimaginable torment for both parties. “All of our thoughts remain with Brianna and her family,” they stated.
A Message of Compassion and Loss
Esther Ghey, with immense strength and compassion, emphasized the need for empathy and understanding in this tragedy. She pleaded for a recognition of the loss and trauma Evans and Ratcliffe’s families have also endured, stating that they, too, suffer the eternal heartbreak of losing a child.
In a statement reflecting on the magnitude of their daughter’s actions, the Evans family expressed agreement with the jury’s unequivocal verdict, the judge’s profound sentence, and the ruling to publicize the identities of both perpetrators.
Brianna’s family, understandably distraught by the loss, delivered impactful victim impact statements in court, detailing their ongoing trauma and the painful void in their lives since Brianna’s murder.
Understanding the Tragic Events
The judge, Mrs. Justice Yip, shed light on the deeply disturbing motivations that led to Brianna’s murder. She explained that Evans had a “deep desire to kill” which she found “exciting” and “sexually arousing.” Jenkinson’s psychiatrist further revealed her obsession with serial killers, disclosing that she had revealed intentions to keep parts of Brianna’s body.
The court heard that Evans, in her fascination with violence, had even created a “kill list” that included the names of her caregivers. She had previously blamed Ratcliffe for the murder, though following her conviction, Evans admitted her active participation in the stabbing.
There was no evidence, however, that the assailants had taken body parts following the 28 stab wounds inflicted on Brianna.
Ensuring Justice and Public Safety
The judge warned both defendants of the possibility of never being released should they continue to pose a threat to the public. Such a grave concern arose as the court learned that Jenkinson expressed a desire to kill again after her conviction.
Throughout this deeply distressing trial, one thing has become clear—the undying trauma suffered by both the Ghey and Evans families. As the anniversary of Brianna Ghey’s passing approaches, her family and friends, as well as the wider community, are left grappling with the horrific consequences of this senseless and well-planned murder.
As sentencing is complete and justice has been served, a long road to healing and understanding lies ahead for all those affected by this unimaginable tragedy.
