REPORT: Sunday morning. Crowded parking lot, buses and trams. Crowds of people with crammed bags on the sidewalks, at bus stops, at cash registers and at stalls. This is what the popular flea markets in Vysočany looked like, where people from all over Prague traditionally go. “More than two thousand people came on Saturday. It is now ten o’clock and so far we have registered one thousand three hundred and fifty-six,” Roman Cíleček, director of Flohmarkt, which operates flea markets, told the PrahaIN.cz portal.

He adds at the same time that on Saturday afternoon he had to give an order to close the access road to the complex for several tens of minutes. The capacity of the parking lot was used up to one hundred percent. A continuous line of cars was heading to the complex even at the time of our visit. We are here to see if the rumors about the interesting prices are true.

All stands are full. You can really get everything here. Linens, glasses, vases, complete kitchen equipment in the form of plates, pots and mugs, new and old jewelry, shoes, new and old electronics, carpets, furniture, curtains, antiques, air guns, gas pistols, knives and daggers, books, music carriers and in the local army shop also called canadas and classic military celts from the fifties of the last century.

The rumors didn’t lie

But the biggest crowds invariably head to the sellers of fruit, vegetables and other food. Some vegetables and fruits look better than in supermarkets, and the prices here are actually slightly breathtaking.

Beautiful peppers of various types from 35 to 49 crowns per kilo, several types of tomatoes from 35 to 49 crowns per kilo. A massive bundle of fresh dill costs 21 crowns, a clove of garlic costs 15. The most expensive are cucumbers, a kilo is available for 120 crowns. “We come here from Karlín and buy everything here. They have vegetables and fruits at amazing prices and the quality is incomparable to supermarkets. My husband bought a new cell phone here a year ago and it was almost a thousand dollars cheaper than in the store. We also buy shoes and clothes here,” a fifty-year-old customer told our editors.

Since the New Year, food has been subject to the new unified VAT rate of 12 percent, currently it is in the first reduced rate of 15 percent. But who would have expected that…

Here, oranges cost 25 crowns per kilo, tangerines are 20 cents, pomegranates have a uniform price of 12 crowns per piece, mangoes cost 10 crowns, and a huge papaya costs 60 crowns. Persimmons cost from 5 to 10 crowns per piece, a pack of physalis costs 30 crowns , a kilo tub of blue wine will cost the customer 49 crowns. Canadian blueberries cost the most. You will pay exactly one hundred per kilo.

Ladies in fur coats also shop here

Next to the fruit and vegetable stalls there is a queue for cheese and other food. The offer is very varied and the choice is huge. Salmon fillet in tomato for 35, sardines for 25, sprats for 30, a half-kilo can of pork in its own juice for 45, a massive stick of Gothai for 100, a kilo of smoked edam for 165, classic for 150 crowns.

Instant Chinese soups are ten crowns, and there are similar goods in similar price ranges, including dog pies for 15 crowns each. “People buy everything from us. Sweets for children and normal everyday food. You have to eat. Everyone comes here too. Sometimes a family with children, pensioners, comes, another time a lady in an expensive fur coat comes,” the salesman Mirek says goodbye to us.

A little later, during a conversation over coffee, the director of the flea market confirms his words. “People from all over the company come to shop with us. If you don’t believe, take a look at our parking lot. A socially weak family can hardly drive a car for half a million,” smiles Roman Cíleček.
