Chairman Kim Jong-un’s Abolishing of Unification Plan Causes Shock in Pro-North Korea Groups

The southern headquarters of the Pan-National Coalition for Fatherland Reunification (Pan-Dinryun), a representative pro-North Korea group, decided to hold a general meeting on the 17th to discuss disbanding the organization. The South Korean Committee for the Implementation of the June 15 Joint Declaration also recently held a general meeting to discuss future route issues, including organizational reorganization. The reason pro-North Korea groups have begun the process of voluntarily disbanding is because of North Korea’s recent sudden change of course. At a plenary meeting of the Workers’ Party at the end of last year, Kim Jong-un abolished the Goryeo Federation unification plan and the three charters for national unification, saying, “Unification cannot be achieved with the Republic of Korea” and “North-South relations are a hostile relationship between two countries.” As a follow-up measure, when the North Korean authorities announced that they would liquidate the North Korean headquarters of the Pan-National Coalition and the June 15 North Korea Committee, domestic pro-North Korea groups are also following suit.

Pan-Minryun is a pro-North Korea, anti-Korea unified front organization formed in 1990 by convening civic groups from South Korea, North Korea, and overseas to Berlin in order to pursue North Korea’s actions against South Korea. The South Korean headquarters received leadership of the domestic pro-North Korea movement from the Labor Party and has served as the head of a pro-North Korea organization. He led anti-American and anti-government activities, calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Korea and the abolition of the National Security Act. In 2012, the Vice Chairman visited North Korea without permission and said, “Chairman Kim Jong-il of the National Defense Commission is the father of the nation.” Starting in 1992, during the preparatory committee period, it did not disband even after being ruled a transfer group by the court three times, in 1997 and 2012. Unlike other profiteering organizations that preserved their organization by changing their signboards, Pan-Minryun did not change its name, claiming that Kim Il-sung himself gave it its name. Then, this time, when Kim Jong-un said one word, it was said to disappear on its own.

Domestic pro-North Korea and pro-North Korea groups are in a state of shock, confusion, and despair due to Kim Jong-un’s abandonment of the unification policy. The South Korean headquarters of the Pan-Democrat Alliance, which was the first to disband, announced a ‘conference to resolve the construction of a new organization.’ This may mean that the anti-American and anti-government struggle will continue, even though the Pan-National Union sign is taken down. It is highly likely that other pro-North Korea and anti-government groups will follow in the footsteps of the Pan-National Coalition. They may plot a second or third ‘Lee Seok-ki-style incitement of civil war’ to attack our national infrastructure in case of emergency.
