Kominfo Contemplates Minimum 100Mbps Internet Package Regulations: Public Needs Under Scrutiny

Jakarta

The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) revealed the regulations paket Internet Fixed Broadband a minimum of 100 Mbps is still under discussion. Kominfo also requires further studies to determine the public’s needs for internet speed.

This is done by Kominfo to find out how realistic the policy is before it is implemented. Moreover, Secretary of the Directorate General of Post and Information Technology (Ditjen PPI) Indra Maulana said that people’s purchasing power standards for Fixed Broadband Internet packages vary.

“Frankly, the government cannot have a one-way policy because we have to listen to the needs of the people in various regions in Indonesia,” said Indra at the Communications and Information Office, Jakarta, Friday (3/1/2024).

Indra stated that many people in big cities are using 100 to 200 Mbps services, even higher. However, he also does not deny that this reality only applies to certain economic levels, communities and certain areas.

“In other regions, maybe not, that’s why we have to synergize with all the regions, the government can’t make a one-way policy. That’s what we’re doing, we’re communicating with the operators themselves so that the policy doesn’t become a burden on the operators. And secondly, don’t let it “This policy burdens the community,” he explained.

It is known that this effort to accelerate the internet is a step to boost internet services in Indonesia, which are still less fast than other countries in ASEAN. This is a big challenge, especially for the Directorate General of PPI Kominfo to resolve this issue.

“Well, yesterday, the Minister of Communications and Information already proposed that our internet speed be limited to a minimum of 100 Mbps, this effort is certainly a real effort that is a manifestation of real action from the government’s presence to improve the quality of internet services in Indonesia,” said Indra.

He also said that to increase internet speed, there needs to be synergy with other parties to create a new market balance. There is purchasing power to consider.

“So, we are formulating it according to the Minister’s direction Kominfo “We continue to coordinate with communications operators, whether we can achieve 100 Mbps or not,” he added.

Indra also stated that it is impossible for regulations to come out before there is coordination. Looking at the reality, many people are still comfortable with cheap internet rates even though they are not very fast.
