Have you noticed that TikTok has become a little quieter in the last few days? The world’s largest music corporation “Universal Music Group” (UMG) has removed music from “TikTok” because a new license agreement with the platform has not been concluded.
In an open letter to musicians and songwriters on January 30, UMG said it could not agree with TikTok on key issues related to payments, artificial intelligence (AI) solutions and security.
The publisher group said their “primary responsibility is to our artists,” which outweighs the consequences of leaving the app. “We will always fight for our artists and songwriters and stand up for the creative and commercial value of music,” UMG said.
“TikTok” in its response accuses UMG of “greed” and lies. UMG’s current contract expired on January 31st, after which musicians represented by the corporation are no longer available on the app. UMG confirmed this in a new statement, calling TikTok’s position “miserably out of date,” suggesting that a resolution to the issue is still far over the horizon.
Artists have pulled their music from TikTok before, but this is the first time it’s happening on this scale. UMG claims that TikTok only wants to pay artists “a fraction of the rate of other social platforms” and only accounts for about one percent of the corporation’s total revenue.
UMG is the largest of the three major publishing groups (along with Sony and Warner), which includes pop labels such as Republic, Interscope, Def Jam, Capitol and Geffen, UMG also distributes music from other labels. In other words, it’s much more than just one record label.
Among the list of artists affected by the lawsuit, the most famous ones are: Taylor Swift, BTS, Drake, Ariana Grande, Bad Bunny, SZA, Billie Eilish, Adele, Olivia Rodrigo, The Weeknd and Rihanna.
