Results of Latvian Dance Competition 2021: Winners, Categories, and Evaluations

In this year’s competition, eight dances were entered in the category “Latvian folk dances and play dance decorations”, while 122 dances were entered in the category “Latvian stage dances created using folklore choreographic material and musical material or its elements”. Among the dance applicants were both experienced choreographers and new generation choreographers.

The dances were evaluated by a jury – doctor of pedagogic sciences, choreographer, honorary director of the General Latvian Song and Dance Festival and the Latvian School Youth Song and Dance Festival Rita Spalva, choreographer, assistant professor of the Early Music Department and Dance Pedagogy Department of the Jāzepa Vītola Latvian Academy of Music Guna Ezermale, choreographer, Latvian Assistant professor of the Academy of Culture, teacher of classical, historical and characteristic dances at the Riga Ballet School, pedagogue of the Latvian National Ballet – repetiteur Iļja Vlasenko, head of the Alūksnes district dance groups, artistic director of the “Piebaldženi” dance group of the Jaunpiebalga Culture House Lāsma Skutāne, Latvian National Cultural Center Historical Lands and Intangibles Katrīna Feldmane, Folklore and folk music expert of the cultural heritage department.

The chairman of the jury, Rita Spalva, emphasizes: “The competition pleased us not only with a record number of dances, but also with their quality. In the competition, we saw many successful choreographic solutions, searches in the creation of small dance forms. It is a great opportunity for dance groups to supplement and refresh their repertoire.”
