NEW YORK. A Swedish triple bomb detonated in the NHL last night.
Elias Lindholm was sent from the Calgary Flames to the Vancouver Canucks – in exchange for Andrei Kuzmenko, draft picks and young talent.
He has long been considered the hottest name in the trade market that is now approaching its climax, Elias Lindholm – because the current contract with the Calgary Flames expires after this season and negotiations for an extension have barely even occurred.
However, most observers believed that a possible deal awaited closer to the deadline in early March – and that he would then end up in a team in the Eastern Conference, for example a New York Rangers in urgent need of a center.
But it won’t be like that.
Already last night, the Vancouver Canucks’ Swedish general manager Patrik Allvin – who himself signed a contract extension on Wednesday – looked to trade the compatriot from the neighboring club on the other side of the Rockies.
Going in the opposite direction is Andrei Kuzmenko, a first and fourth pick in this summer’s draft, as well as young talents Hunter Brzustewicz and Joni Jurmo.
It’s a high price, but Allvin and the rest of the Canucks management are clearly committed to winning this spring.
Elias Lindholm has eleven seasons in the NHL under his belt, of which the first five were with the Carolina Hurricanes and the rest with the Flames – which the 29-year-old son of Gävle piquantly represents during the upcoming All Star weekend in Toronto.
At the league leaders on the farthest west coast, he will be teammates with Elias Pettersson, Nils Höglander and Nils Åman and is expected to wear the role of second center.
