Winter travel traffic is heading towards its peak in Salzburg. After the certificates are awarded on Friday, the first vehicles from Vienna, Lower Austria and Vorarlberg are likely to be on their way to holiday destinations. The one-week staggered semester break begins for around 530,000 students, which starts a week later in Salzburg. Winter holidays also begin in the German states of Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony-Anhalt.
Salzburg traffic jam hotspots at a glance
At the weekend – especially on Saturday – heavy travel traffic to and from the Salzburg ski regions is to be expected, the ARBÖ announced. The focal point is once again the Tauern Autobahn (A10) in Salzburg, where traffic jams and significant delays are expected in front of the tunnel construction area between Golling (Tennengau) andwerfen (Pongau).
Traffic reports in real time
But the streets away from the motorway are also likely to become more crowded, such as on Pinzgauer Straße (B311) near the still closed Schmittentunnel in Zell am See (Pinzgau). The ARBÖ also expects a slow traffic flow on Loferer Straße (B178) and Ennstalstraße (B320).
Highest volume of traffic expected on Saturday
The main travel day is traditionally Saturday. Experience has shown that travel starts in the morning and continues until the late afternoon. “If you want to save your nerves and avoid traffic jams, you should avoid this time of trip as much as possible,” says ARBÖ traffic expert Thomas Haider. The trip on vacation will not only take longer, but will also be considerably more expensive due to increased fuel prices.
Diesel and super more expensive in January
Drivers beware: Diesel was 3.7 cents more expensive this January and Super was 4.4 cents more expensive per liter than in December 2023, the ÖAMTC calculated on Thursday. The mobility club referred to the higher CO2 pricing that has been in effect since the beginning of the year. The price increase for diesel would correspond almost exactly to this price; for Super, the price increase would be slightly higher than the pure environmental surcharge.
The average prices per liter at Austrian gas stations in January were 1.639 euros for diesel and 1.534 euros for gasoline. The ÖAMTC has a tip for the semester break: Anyone traveling west should know that refueling is most expensive in Vorarlberg and Tyrol – fuel prices here are up to five cents above the Austrian average.

That will change for drivers in 2024
For drivers in Austria, the main changes in 2024 will be the regulations for new registrations and CO2 limits. The child seat standards are also being adjusted. We …
And don’t forget: As of today, Thursday, everyone who travels on motorways or expressways will need the sunny yellow adhesive or digital vignette 2024. Anyone who is caught without a valid vignette will have to pay a replacement toll in Austria: for single-lane vehicles this is 65 euros , for multi-track 120 euros. The new annual vignette is valid until January 31, 2025.
