Russian Citizen Detained in Argentina at Ukraine’s Request, Trial Pending for Extradition

On Tuesday, January 30, Argentine police detained a Russian citizen at the request of Ukraine. A trial is currently pending on the issue of his possible extradition to Kyiv.

According to press service State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine (SBI), the detainee is the son of a Russian businessman Igor Churkin. He is accused of “trying to deceive his business in Ukraine.”

According to the Ukrainian side, in 2022, Lviv Bus Plants LLC, owned by Churkin, took out a large loan from the state bank secured by property. The owner of the LLC “spent the money at his own discretion” and refused to repay the loan, but at the same time did not want to lose the property that was pledged.

“Therefore, a Russian businessman developed a scheme to block an auction for the sale of collateral by a Ukrainian bank,” the SBI press release said.

The fact of the Russian’s detention was confirmed by the head of the consular department of the Russian Embassy in Buenos Aires Natalia Pustovalova.

“The Embassy received an official notification from the police at Ezeiza International Airport that on January 30, at the request of Interpol of Ukraine, Russian citizen I.I. was detained. Churkin,” she told reporters.

As the diplomat explained, the detainee arrived in Argentina with his family “for tourism purposes”; the preliminary court hearing had already taken place on February 1. According to his decision, the specified citizen was released on his own recognizance not to leave the country.

The embassy representative noted that within 45 days there should be another court hearing, which will decide whether to extradite the Russian to Ukraine.

Previously EADaily reported that clashes between law enforcement officers and protesters occurred in front of the Argentine Congress building in Buenos Aires. As a result, 15 people were injured.
