The owners of the famous, huge and opulent department store KaDeWe in Berlin, Kaufhaus Des Westens, have gone bankrupt, but are currently staying open.
But the department store will remain open for the time being. But the owners of the KaDeWe Group are bankrupt, writes the international German media DW.
KaDeWe Group was owned by the Thai Central Group with 50.1 percent, while the rest was owned by the Austrian property group Signa Retail. The reason for the bankruptcy of the KaDeWe group is allegedly a sharp increase in the rent, cites Standby.dk the German media Die Welt.
– With normal rent, we would have a strong future, says CEO of KaDeWe, Michael Peterseim.
The KaDeWe building on Wittenbergplatz opened in 1907, and over the years has become one of Berlin’s biggest tourist attractions along with the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag building and the TV tower at Alexanderplatz.
