Bulgarian Prime Minister Denkov Meets with European Leaders to Discuss Eurozone and Schengen Accession

“What I see is a rather serious attempt to thwart the possibility of direct contacts between me and the people I work with and the United States, which cannot be done.”

This is how Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov commented on the claims that US President Joe Biden refused to meet with him.

Denkov emphasized that he will comment on the future visit when it is planned.

Financier: It is not possible to enter the Eurozone in the middle of the year

“I think that someone is trying to take positions that do not belong to him,” the prime minister added.

He was categorical that any claims that the “Agriculture” sector does not have support from the EU are completely false.

“The topic of how to restructure this sector, because it is one of the most important for the European economy, was put up for discussion. First, the chairman of the commission gave information about yesterday’s decisions. A discussion was made. What they further specified is that a rather serious conversation has begun on how to restructure the sector and the aid to it”, explained the Prime Minister.

According to Denkov, there is a disinformation campaign related to farmers’ protests in the EU.

“You can see a coordination of disinformation being used to fuel the protests. That is why it was very important to identify the real problems and to solve them”, emphasized Denkov.

“I have had a lot of conversations with the partners who could support us on land borders for Schengen and the Eurozone. We spoke with the prime ministers of Germany, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Finland. Some of these countries are known for being among the most cautious, they have always been careful about budgets. I told them what the fiscal picture looks like in Bulgaria – the low values of the foreign debt and the deficit. I can say that we will have the support of these countries when it comes time to discuss. We are working for January 1, 2025,” added Denkov.

“Bulgaria can count on Germany’s support for its accession to the Eurozone and the lifting of land borders in Schengen”.

The assurance was given by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in a conversation with Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov in Brussels.

The Prime Minister also spoke privately with the Prime Minister of Finland, Petteri Orpo, who also assured that our country can count on their vote for the Eurozone and Schengen.

Denkov introduced the partners to the fiscal picture in our country, the low external debt and the low deficit.

“We expect inflation to be within the Maastricht rules by the end of the year. We are working towards the date of January 1, 2025,” the Prime Minister confirmed regarding the Eurozone.

Within the framework of the European Council in Brussels, Nikolay Denkov discussed the priorities for our country with the heads of state from “Renew Europe”. The prime ministers of the Netherlands, Belgium, Slovenia and Estonia – Mark Rutte, Alexander de Cro, Robert Golob and Kaya Kalas – also gave their support for Bulgaria’s entry into the Eurozone and the fall of the Schengen land borders. Denkov recalled that these countries are known for being among the most cautious, they have always been careful regarding budgets, and therefore their assessment is of particular importance.

In connection with the agreement reached in the Council on support for Ukraine, the Prime Minister of Bulgaria expressed satisfaction with the final result. “It’s good to be united. There was no disagreement on the important topics”, noted the Prime Minister and highlighted the contribution of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.
