Crisis in NYC: Surge in Homeless Shelter Population Driven by Immigrants and Increased Violence

The number of people in New York City’s shelter system rose 53% at the start of this fiscal year, driven by the relentless increase in immigrants, according to Mayor Eric Adams’ preliminary management report released Tuesday.

Many shelters have been the scene of violencein and around, including the homicide of a 24-year-old stabbed in a food line fight on Randall’s Island in early January, for which three Hispanics have been charged.

Also last weekend Five immigrants were accused of beating two police officers in Times Square, a world tourist mecca. The suspects were freed thanks to the penal reform, generating such outrage that Governor Kathy Hochul announced the possibility of their being deported.

“If someone commits a crime against a police officer in New York state and they’re not here legally, it’s definitely worth investigating,” Hochul said. “These are law enforcement officers who should never, under any circumstances, be subjected to physical assault,” he added. “It is wrong in every way and I hope the judges and prosecutors do the right thing.”

Mayor’s report on shelter collapse compares data and performance of city agencies during the first four months of the current fiscal year (July to October 2023) with the same period of 2022.

The 53% increase in the average daily population in NYC shelters is “driven by the unprecedented increase in incoming people, mainly asylum seekers which represented more than half of all entrants during the period,” said the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) in its quarterly evaluation included in the 432-page report.

There was an average of 83,985 people in city-run shelters per day during the quarterly period compared to 54,738 people in 2022, highlighted New York Post.

“The flow of asylum seekers to New York City fueled a 147% increase in shelter admissions for families with children and a 185% increase in shelter admissions for adult families,” says the report. The report added that In contrast, the number of single adults entering shelters managed or supervised by DHS fell 13% compared to a year ago.

Mayor Adams announced a 60-day limit on shelters in July and reduced it to 30 days in September to provide relief to the overwhelmed system, although the report does not explicitly cite time restrictions as encouraging shorter stays.

New York City has opened more than 210 emergency shelter sites to house more than 170,700 migrants since the border crisis began in 2022according to officials. More than 100 hotels They have become emergency shelters, at an estimated cost exceeding one billion dollars.

The migration crisis has marked the two years of Adams’ administration, in the midst of a national political battle between democrats and republicans. It is estimated that between April 2022 and December 2023, NYC spent approximately $3.5 billion dollars in housing and services for more than 164,500 people who passed through the city’s admission center.

In September, Mayor Adams declared that the massive arrival of immigrants will “destroy” the city. The situation has caused, in his own words, “Extremely painful” spending cuts that will affect millions of New Yorkers and hamper all city agencies by claiming the lack of resources from Joe Biden’s government.

At the beginning of January, the city of New York sued 17 transportation and charter bus companies for $708 million dollars to partially recover the costs of the immigration crisis due to the massive sending of undocumented immigrants from the southern border in Texas.
