Japan Meteorological Agency Forecast: Large Temperature Difference and Heavy Rain in February with Potential Snow from Southern Coast Cyclone

1 month forecast: Large temperature difference, tendency to rain, be careful of snow caused by the “south coast cyclone”

February 01, 2024 16:02

The Japan Meteorological Agency announced the forecast for the next month on the 1st. Temperatures are expected to rise mainly from western Japan to eastern Japan, so watch out for the sharper temperature difference than ever before. Due to the periodic effects of low pressure and fronts, there is a possibility that there will be a lot of precipitation in February. Also, be careful of snow caused by the “southern coast low pressure system.”

Temperatures are high, with large temperature differences between winter and spring.

The Japan Meteorological Agency announced the forecast for the next month today (Thursday). The period is from February 3rd (Saturday) to March 2nd (Saturday).
During this period, the weather will not be affected by cold air, and temperatures will be higher than normal, especially in Okinawa/Amami, western Japan, and eastern Japan. Northern Japan is likely to be at a normal level.

February is the month when the season changes from winter to spring. The start of February today has been unseasonably warm in the Kanto-Koshin and Tokai regions, but temperatures are likely to rise even more from now on. Throughout the month, temperatures tend to be high in the Kanto region and west, but every time cold air flows into the sky, there will be days when the mid-winter cold returns. Tomorrow, the 2nd (Friday), places that were warm today will return to the coldness of midwinter.

There will be many relatively warm days from now on, but there will also be days when the temperature drops suddenly, so the temperature difference will be even bigger than before, and it will be hard for our bodies to bear. In the areas affected by the 2020 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, it is essential to continue to be careful about hypothermia amid prolonged evacuation life. In preparation for sudden cold weather, it is necessary to have as many cold weather items as possible.

Additionally, the amount of snow on the Sea of Japan side tends to be less compared to normal years. However, if strong cold air moves south, even temporarily, there is a risk of locally heavy snow. On days when snow is expected, take early precautions to stay safe.

Beware of the “southern coast low pressure system” with heavy rain in western and eastern Japan

Precipitation for the month will be above normal on the Pacific side of western Japan, and at or above normal on the Sea of Japan side of western Japan and the Pacific side of eastern Japan.
It is likely to be affected by low pressure systems and fronts, and there will be more cloudy and rainy days than normal. Precipitation in northern Japan and Hokuriku will be at normal levels.

It tends to rain periodically, mainly on the Pacific side, and in February there will be days when it rains more heavily or in heavy rain. From now on, the weather will change quickly and the temperature difference will become even bigger.
In addition, February is a season where heavy snow is likely to fall on the Pacific side of the Kanto and Tokai regions due to the “southern coast cyclone”. If snow is forecast, please pay close attention to the weather information and prepare early. If you hear of a “southern coast low pressure system,” please check the weather forecast until just before the event to see how much of an impact it will have.

“South coast low pressure” early next week, possibility of snow in inland Kanto

A “southern coast low” is expected to move forward from the 5th (Monday) to the 6th (Tuesday) next week.
On the 5th (Monday), cold rain will fall from Kyushu to the Kanto region, and on the night of the 5th, there is a possibility of snow mainly in the inland areas of the Kanto region. Also, on the 6th (Tuesday), it is possible that snow will fall on the Pacific side of Tohoku, resulting in heavy snowfall.

Although the forecast is still uncertain, please check the latest information and take early measures if snow is expected.
So far, the only snow this season in central Tokyo has been the first snow observed on January 13th (Saturday), and there are many days with high temperatures, so it’s easy to let your guard down. We need to be careful of heavy snow caused by the low pressure system. Four years ago, in 2020, it was a mild winter, but on March 29th, 1cm of snow was observed in central Tokyo.

From Monday the 5th to Tuesday the 6th, there is a higher chance of rain than snow in central Tokyo, but the forecast may still change. Please continue to pay attention to future information.
