Garbage Collectors Strike in Perpignan Demanding Better Pay and Working Conditions

Garbage collectors have been blocking the municipal technical center of Perpignan in the Pyrénées-Orientales since 3 a.m. this Thursday, February 1, 2024. They are demanding an improvement in their remuneration.

Of the 80 salaried agents in the Perpignan Méditerranée Métropole agglomeration, 95% are on strike this Thursday, February 1, 2024. They have been blocking the municipal technical center since 3 a.m.

No truck has come out since. Consequence: there will be no collection of household waste in Perpignan, Bompas and Cabestany.

The striking garbage collectors are demanding recognition and an improvement in their remuneration, including a “purchasing power” bonus, like that received by state civil service and hospital civil service agents. “For the territorial civil service, it is left to the discretion of the communitiesregrets Guillem Vaulato, the CGT general secretary of territorial civil servants of Perpignan. We claim this bonus too. There must be equality in the different public functions.”

If we want to put resources into sorting, we need human resources and also trucks!

Other demands: hiring, as well as the revaluation of the drivers’ bonus to the same level as that of collectors, the introduction of meal vouchers, and above all the return to the collection of yellow bins, that is to say the packaging household recyclables, every week and no longer every two weeks. “The government encourages sorting, people sort more, the bins are overflowing and it becomes very difficult for the agents.”

“Wearing a helmet was imposed without consultation with the agents due to hygiene problems and the summer heatadds Guillem Vaulato. “It’s invisible work, we only see it when it’s not done. Today, it will be seen. There was no Ségur des Garbage Cans. Especially since now, there is no “There’s more applause and the officers feel disrespected.”
