Today, Thursday, US Central Command announced the downing of a Houthi anti-ship ballistic missile and Iranian drones in the Gulf of Aden.
The US military said that an American warship shot down a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis from areas under their control in Yemen, in addition to three Iranian drones on Wednesday.
The US Central Command, Centcom, said in a statement, “Houthi militants backed by Iran launched an anti-ship ballistic missile from the areas they control in Yemen towards the Gulf of Aden. The USS Carney was able to shoot it down successfully,” referring to the American destroyer.
Centcom added that less than an hour later, “the USS Carney shot down three Iranian drones nearby,” without specifying whether they were armed or just for surveillance.
The Houthi group announced in a statement on Wednesday evening that it had targeted an American commercial ship that was heading to Israeli ports with naval missiles that directly hit it.
The group’s military spokesman said that the Houthis targeted, in a “qualitative operation”, the American merchant ship “Koi.”
The spokesman confirmed that the military operation came hours after the targeting of the American destroyer USS Greeley.
The spokesman stressed that the Houthis will continue to “prevent Israeli navigation or navigation heading to the ports of occupied Palestine until the aggression stops and the siege on Gaza is lifted.”
He added that the group “will confront the American-British escalation with escalation, and will not hesitate to carry out broad and qualitative military operations in response to any foolishness.”
On Thursday morning, the company “Embry” Maritime Security issued a statement in which it said, “It was reported that a commercial ship was targeted by a missile while sailing southwest of Aden, Yemen,” adding that “the ship reported an explosion” on board.
On Wednesday, the Houthis announced that they fired several naval missiles towards an American destroyer in the Red Sea, hours after the US army announced that it shot down a Houthi missile.
