National Weather Service Issues Rainfall and Wind Advisory for Bay Area
The National Weather Service has issued a rainfall and wind advisory for the Bay Area, predicting heavy rain and strong winds throughout the region. According to the latest graphic released by the weather service, heavy rain is expected to hit the entire North Bay by 10 a.m., with San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose experiencing rainfall between 10 a.m. and noon.
Early Wednesday morning, light rain was already falling over the North Bay, and it is anticipated to gradually move south of the Golden Gate throughout the morning and afternoon, spreading across the greater Bay Area. However, the heaviest rain is expected later in the day, possibly around 2 or 3 p.m.
This weather system is known as an atmospheric river, drawing moisture from the subtropics across the Pacific Ocean. While these systems can often stall over land and cause flooding, meteorologists are confident that this storm will move quickly over the area, reducing the risk of prolonged heavy rainfall. As a result, earlier forecasts of up to 3 inches of rain for San Francisco have been revised to 1.5 to 2.5 inches.
Despite this adjustment, a flood watch remains in effect for the region until 4 a.m. Thursday, as rapid rises in creeks and flooding on roadways are still possible. Coastal mountain ranges are expected to see 3 to 5 inches of rain, while low-lying areas, including San Francisco, will likely experience 1.5 to 2.5 inches.
In addition to heavy rainfall, strong winds are also a significant concern with this storm. A wind advisory has been issued for the entire Bay Area until 4 a.m. Thursday, with gusts of up to 45 mph possible. Coastal areas and higher terrain face an even more severe warning, as gusts over 55 mph are anticipated. These winds will be coming from a southerly direction, which is unusual for the region. As a result, structures and trees that are not accustomed to these southerly winds may be at risk. Downed trees and power outages are likely amid the blustery conditions.
Residents in the Bay Area are advised to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this storm. It is recommended to stay indoors as much as possible, secure loose objects outside, and avoid driving through flooded areas. Stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and warnings from the National Weather Service to ensure your safety during this rainfall and wind event.
Overall, while the Bay Area prepares for heavy rain and strong winds, meteorologists are optimistic that this atmospheric river will move swiftly through the region, minimizing the risk of prolonged flooding. Nonetheless, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential hazards that may arise from this storm.
