BUDAPEST/BRUSSELS – Salis Ilaria, a 39-year-old teacher from Italy is accused of organizing and actively participating in an anti-fascist attack a year ago. Members of the radical and far-left brigade then attacked members of the far-right five times in the course of three days. Salis is accused of attacking two neo-Nazis. Although their injuries were minor, the Hungarian side claims otherwise. Her story and accusation has also become a political case, and she is reviewing bilateral agreements between two EU countries.
Salis appeared in court on January 29 with chains, handcuffs, and bound legs, informs eunews. She is accused of grievous bodily harm, although according to the Italian side, the victims recovered in a few days and did not even press charges.

The incident happened during the so-called “Day of Honor” February 11, 2023, which was also attended by followers of Hitler’s ideology. It was then that five physical attacks occurred. While another co-defendant was sentenced to three years in Germany, Salis Ilaria faces up to 16 years behind bars in Hungary. The father asked the Hungarian courts to place her under house arrest in her native Italy, but the Hungarian court refused. However, he hopes for the power of the petition, which has already been signed by 48,000 people. “She is being treated as an international terrorist, is under strict surveillance and has been banned from contacting the Italian authorities and her family.” In the past, he also criticized the fact that she was almost 35 days without clean clothes, hygiene aids, or an ordinary towel.
The first attack happened at the railway station on a train, the second at Fővám Square, the third and fourth attacks took place on February 10 at Gazdagréti Square and Bank Street, and the fifth at Mikó Street in the first district of Budapest. According to the Hungarian media, among the victims were Hungarian as well as foreign nationals. One of the attacked also commented on the incident. “I was hit on the head with a telescopic stick from behind and had to be stitched up in the hospital. The left side of my face was swollen, my cheekbones were cracked, my girlfriend was stabbed twice in the thigh with nothing. She was in shock. I hope they all get caught and the lock on them rots in jail,” added for Hungarian Glance László Dudog.
Had Salis accepted the plea deal, she would have been sentenced to 11 years in prison. But Salis decided otherwise. “I did not commit these crimes, I do not accept what I was accused of,” she said in court. However, her accomplice apologized. “I apologize, I apologize to the court and the prosecutor’s office. I plead guilty and waive my right to a trial. Everything happened as stated in the indictment,” he added. The court accepted his statement and sentenced him to 3 years in prison and banishment from the territory of Hungary for 5 years.
The desperate father demanded the inhumane conditions for his daughter, as well as a fair punishment, from the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, to the Minister of Justice, as well as to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, but without an answer. “I didn’t get any answers. The government apparently has other priorities,” he says. The trial was postponed until May 2024. The state of Hungarian prisons was also documented and criticized by the European Court of Human Rights and the Committee of the Council of Europe.
