Galaxy Flip 6, battery capacity expected to be 4000mAh… Same level as Galaxy S24, 300mAh higher than previous model… Expected expansion of device use time
It is predicted that the next-generation model of Samsung Electronics’ foldable phone ‘Galaxy Z Flip’ will have a larger battery capacity, which is a chronic problem. The battery capacity has been increased by about 300 mAh compared to the previous model, and the usage time is expected to increase by several hours.
According to the industry on the 1st, the battery capacity of the Galaxy Z Flip 6, which will be released in the second half of this year, is expected to reach 4000 mAh, which is about 8% more than the previous model. It is at the same level as the recently released bar-type flagship phone Galaxy S24.
The Flip series has been popular for its compact size that fits in one hand, but it has consistently received criticism that its battery life is too short. In fact, the battery life of the first model in the Flip series was only 3300 mAh, which is only 80% of the Galaxy S20 released in the same year.
Samsung Electronics later increased the battery capacity to 3700 mAh starting with the Flip 4 in 2022, and is attempting to expand battery capacity again for the first time in two years.
Due to the nature of foldable phones, the Flip series battery is divided into two cells, one on each side. The Flip 6’s rated capacity is expected to be 1097mAh on one side and 2790mAh on the other side, for a total of 3887mAh. This rated capacity is set at 4000 mAh as the general capacity listed in promotional specifications, etc. In the case of the Flip 5, which was released last year, the rated capacity was evaluated as a total of 3591 mAh, including 971 mAh and 2620 mAh.
If the battery capacity is increased by about 300 mAh, the actual usable time is expected to increase by at least tens of minutes.
Samsung Electronics also increased the capacity of the Galaxy S24 by 100 mAh compared to the Galaxy S23. According to IT media GSM Arena, the Galaxy S24’s battery active use time was set at 12 hours and 6 minutes, about 39 minutes longer than its predecessor, due to the increased battery capacity. In particular, battery usage time increased by about 4 hours when playing video, and when using the Internet or playing games, the battery life was extended by about 13 to 24 minutes.
The actual usable time of a smartphone is affected not only by the battery, but also by the performance of the AP (app processor) and various software optimizations. Unlike the Flip 5, the Flip 6 is equipped with additional features for AI (artificial intelligence) functions, and the external screen size is expected to increase from 3.4 inches to 3.9 inches, so the possibility of further increase in battery consumption cannot be ruled out. Camera performance is also expected to improve from 12 million pixels to 50 million pixels.
However, the prevailing opinion in the industry is that this capacity expansion will be good news for Flip series fans as the battery is the most closely related element to smartphone usage time. The Flip 6 is scheduled to be unveiled at Galaxy Unpack in the second half of this year along with the Fold 6, another foldable phone lineup.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics announced its fourth quarter performance the previous day last year and expressed confidence that it would dominate the AI phone market and solidify its foldable phone leadership in 2024 to drive double-digit flagship phone growth and smartphone sales growth that exceeds the market.
