Françoise Bettencourt Meyers inherited a third of L’Oreal shares from her mother in 2017, making her the world’s richest woman with a net worth of $82.1 billion, according to Bloomberg.
Unlike the typical billionaire heiress, this lady has focused her attention in addition to her membership on the board of directors of L’Oreal (she sits on several board committees, including strategy and sustainability, human resources, nominating and governance), but also on his own writing career. She has written books on a variety of topics, from Greek mythology and Jewish-Christian relations to hearing and deafness.
Françoise turned 70 last summer. She is the granddaughter of L’Oreal founder Eugen Schuler. In 1908, he invented a new hair dye formula. This made Schuler very wealthy and in 1957 his fortune passed to his daughter Liliane Bettencourt. Then she became a prominent socialist. Her husband Andre Bettencourt is a French politician who is a minister and senator in the government. The Bettencourts are well known in French society for their glamorous parties.
From 1953, the couple raised their daughter Françoise. However, she never leads the same glamorous lifestyle as her worldly parents. Her favorite activities are writing and playing the piano. There is generally no understanding in their relationship. The mother-daughter relationship does not go well when Françoise is a teenager.
After Lillian’s death in 2017 Françoise gets her tens of billions of dollars and the Art Deco mansion. The house is located in an affluent suburb west of Paris. She also inherited her childhood home on the coast of Brittany. However, she continues to live in the western suburbs of Paris. Over the years, the wealth of the French woman grew enormously. Madame Bettencourt Meyers’ fortune is estimated at $82.1 billion, according to Bloomberg estimates, making her the world’s richest woman and the world’s 11th richest person. She and her family control 33% of L’Oréal’s shares.
Françoise is married to Jean-Pierre Myers – CEO of the Téthys family holding. They have two sons – Jean-Victor and Nicolas. Jean-Victor began serving on L’Oreal’s board of directors, replacing his grandmother. The company owns mainstream brands such as L’Oreal, Maybelline, Essie, Garnier, Urban Decay, Lancôme and Kiehl’s cosmetics.
Bettencourt Meyers is also president of the Bettencourt-Schueller Foundation, which awards grants to support research in the life sciences and arts.
