Th. Begas: The University of Ioannina wants a distinct role in Domboli

MEETING OF TH. BEGA WITH THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The mayor of Ioannina, Thomas Begas, had the first meeting with the University of Ioannina Administration Council in his office.

During it, the possibilities of expanding the cooperation between the two entities were discussed, focusing on the participation of the people of Ioannina in the initiative for the 100 climate neutral cities.

Mr. Begas expressed his satisfaction for the active interest of the Board of Management in order to contribute to this challenge that the municipality faces and pledged that in the near future the actions in which the University of Ioannina can assist the municipality will be concreted.

At the same time, on behalf of the rector, Anna Batistatou, the issue of the distinct presence of the University of Ioannina in the Dompoli street building was also raised, in order for the Higher Educational Institution of our region to acquire an active role and space.

Mrs. Batistatou also requested that the inscription “University of Ioannina” which is present in the building today remain even after its reconstruction for reasons of symbolism and historicity.

The mayor of Ioannina agreed to both requests as, especially for the first one, he identifies with the logic of utilizing the building that he and his faction submitted to the public debate and wants this historic building not to operate under public service conditions but to be open for the public for as many hours of the day as possible.

Closing the discussion, Mr. Begas made it known that a meeting with the contractor of the project is imminent in order to discuss various improvements – changes in the way of construction and future use, with the aim of the final result to leave the municipality of Ioannito with a landmark building, “alive” and open to citizens and visitors.
