Technical Malfunction Causes Website Outages in Russia: “.ru Domain Zone Affected

There was a problem accessing websites from the “.ru” domain zone across Russia last night, and authorities said it was due to a technical malfunction, DPA reported.

There were also reports of banking apps not working, as well as limited access to social networks, online stores, government service portals and news sites.

The Russian Ministry of Digital Development announced that it was a technical malfunction that would be fixed soon. However, the department did not specify the specific cause of the collapse, which affected several regions of the country. At the same time, websites outside the “.ru” domain zone generally remained accessible.

Independent tech experts have warned that Moscow is working on a plan to create an independent Russian internet and that attempts to bypass the infrastructure that manages global traffic could lead to crashes and outages.

In Moscow, for example, taxi drivers often complain about malfunctioning navigation systems. Access to the WhatsApp and Telegram social networks is also periodically interrupted. In addition, the Russian state censors thousands of sites whose content does not correspond to the government’s views, DPA noted.
