Is dementia “contagious”? A report in the academic journal “Nature” stated that five new cases were discovered in the UK. The patients may have contracted the disease from other people, causing Alzheimer’s disease, and the infection route was an injection many years ago.

Among the dementias, the most common type is Alzheimer’s disease, which is caused by changes in brain cells that produce amyloid proteins, which form plaques and accumulate in the brain, destroying the connections between brain cells.

It is generally believed that the disease develops internally, but the latest evidence shows that under very special circumstances, it is possible for people to contract Alzheimer’s disease from the outside. What makes this situation so special? It starts with a childhood disease.

When children grow slowly and are too short, they will be diagnosed as “dwarfism.” One of the treatments is growth hormone injections. This hormone is normally secreted by the pituitary gland, so the growth hormone injected from the 1950s to the 1980s was collected from the brains of a large number of corpses.

But what if these corpses were living with Alzheimer’s disease? Scholars from University College London found that eight elderly people had been injected with growth hormone when they were children. Later, they found that the injection batches were contaminated with amyloid. As a result, five of the eight elderly people had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The scholar It is suspected that they were infected with amyloid from cadavers from the injection that year, which caused Alzheimer’s disease many years later.

However, scholars emphasize that this is only one of the possibilities. Moreover, even if it is really related to injections, the medical community has banned the collection of hormones from corpses as early as 1985. Growth hormones for injections are now mass-produced using genetic technology.
