After the five-day rail strike in Germany last week, a strike at German airports will start tonight. In Hamburg, among other places, flights will no longer be flown from 10 p.m. due to a strike by security guards. Most German airports are expected to be shut down tomorrow, with the exception of Munich.

The airports of Berlin and Hamburg have already announced that all departing flights tomorrow have been canceled. The consequences for other airports are not yet clear, but if the strike continues, around 1,500 flights could be canceled in Frankfurt alone.

Strike affects eleven airports

Security personnel are on strike at the airports of Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, Hannover, Leipzig, Dresden, Erfurt and Stuttgart.

The Verdi union is demanding an extra 2.80 euros per hour for the more than 25,000 security guards at German airports, as compensation for high inflation. According to the union, the employers have a lower offer ready, but they are only willing to negotiate if Verdi agrees to a mediator. The union does not want that.

Rail and public transport

Germany has recently been faced with numerous strikes in the transport sector. Train traffic has already been stopped several times due to actions for higher salaries and a shorter working week. The last strike was last week; which lasted from Wednesday to Sunday.

After the strike at the airports, it is the turn of city and regional transport on Friday. Bus drivers and tram and metro drivers then stop work. The point of contention in the negotiations for a new collective labor agreement is, among other things, alleviation of the workload. This is now too high, the union says, due to staff shortages at public transport companies.
