Jakarta –
League of Nations (UN) emphasized that no organization can replace the UN Agency for Refugees Palestine (UNRWA). The UN said this amid decisions by several countries, including the United States, Britain, Germany and Japan, to suspend funding for the agency.
“There is no way any organization can replace the extraordinary capacity, structure of UNRWA, (their) capabilities, and their knowledge of the population in Gaza,” said newly appointed coordinator Sigrid Kaag, referring to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. reported by AFP, Wednesday (31/1/2024).
UNRWA said it had acted quickly on Israeli accusations that 12 staff were involved in Hamas attacks. UNRWA also ensured that funding cuts from Western countries would also have an impact on Palestinians in general.
The UN agency has long been under scrutiny by Israel, which accuses it of systematically working against its country’s interests. Israel has vowed to stop the agency’s work in Gaza after the war.
UNRWA Confirms Cannot Operate After February
Previously reported, UNRWA said that they would not be able to continue operations in Gaza after the end of February, if funding was not continued.
A number of countries including the United States, Germany and Britain have suspended their funding to the UN aid agency following allegations that 12 UNRWA staff were involved in the October 7 Hamas attack in Israel.
“If funding is not resumed, UNRWA will not be able to continue its services and operations throughout the region, including in Gaza, after the end of February,” said a spokesperson for the agency, reported by Al Arabiya, Tuesday (30/1).
