Using a bed sheet, an inmate rappelled down around six meters from the prison in Bad Reichenhall and made off. The prisoner had previously dug a hole in the wall with items that were part of the usual prison room equipment – such as cutlery and a broken toilet paper holder – a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Justice said on Tuesday upon request. According to the information, the outbreak occurred on the night of December 17th, 2023. Just one day later – on December 18th – the 28-year-old was arrested again in Traunstein. The man had been in custody since February 16, 2023 on suspicion of particularly serious gang theft, disturbing the peace of the dead and distributing child pornography, among other things. In particular, he is accused of stealing sacred objects from cemeteries, churches and shops in the Traunstein area.
After the outbreak, the processes and measures for additional security at the Bad Reichenhall correctional facility were intensively examined and fundamentally revised, the ministry said. For example, prisoners will no longer be housed in cells on the outer wall. This affects two detention rooms in Bad Reichenhall.
Two other institutions that have comparable detention rooms were checked. The few detention rooms have been cleared and will no longer be occupied until they have additional security. The ministry spokeswoman explained that outbreaks from correctional facilities are the absolute exception in Bavarian prisons. According to Bad Reichenhall JVA, there has been no outbreak or attempted escape there for well over 20 years.
