Weather for the week: Rapid development of low pressure system, blizzard warning for Hokkaido, lack of winter skies in eastern and western Japan due to frontal stagnation
January 30, 2024 17:41
From tomorrow onwards, there is a risk of heavy snowstorms in northern Japan, mainly on the Sea of Japan side, due to the effects of low pressure and strong winter-like atmospheric pressure patterns. Fronts tend to stagnate in eastern and western Japan, and the weather is likely to change in short cycles.
Hokkaido is under blizzard warning
Tomorrow, the 31st (Wednesday), a low pressure system will develop as it moves near Hokkaido, and after that, a strong winter-like pressure pattern will develop mainly in northern Japan. The snow and wind are likely to increase in Hokkaido and Tohoku on the Sea of Japan side.
In particular, Hokkaido, where a low-pressure system will pass nearby, is expected to experience severe storms on February 1st (Thursday), and people should be on guard against heavy snow and blizzards. The storm will bring snow and strong winds that can reach up to 35 meters in some places, which could have a major impact on traffic.
From the 2nd (Friday) onward, clouds will likely spread over the Japan Sea side of northern Japan and Niigata due to the effects of cold air, and there will likely be days of snow or rain.
Western and eastern Japan change in short cycles
From tomorrow, the 31st, the front is likely to stagnate from Kyushu to southern Honshu.
From tomorrow, the 31st to February 1st, there is a possibility that the weather will deteriorate in western Japan and the Tokai region, causing heavy rain in areas along the Pacific coast. There may be rain clouds in some parts of the Kanto region on February 1st.
After that, it will be sunny in many places, but from the 4th (Sunday) onwards, a front and low pressure system will approach again and the weather is expected to deteriorate widely, mainly in western and eastern Japan.
It is expected that there will be many cloudy, rainy, or snowy days in Ishikawa Prefecture as well. The ground on the Noto Peninsula is loose, so we need to be careful about landslides even if it continues to rain.
large temperature changes
Temperatures are expected to be high for this time of year nationwide tomorrow, the 31st. In Kyushu and Shikoku, there are places where the maximum temperature will rise to nearly 20 degrees Celsius.
However, in February, strong cold air flows in, making Sapporo and Asahikawa feel the middle of winter every day. In Tohoku and eastern Japan, there are days when the cold suddenly returns due to the effects of cold air, and in Tokyo, the temperature difference between February 1st and 2nd is likely to be quite large.
Please be careful not to get sick due to the difference in temperature, as there are times when the way you feel can change drastically in one day.
Towards pollen season
According to the Japan Weather Association’s forecasts, cedar pollen is expected to start flying as early as early February. When the weather becomes sunny and the weather becomes less cold, pollen becomes more likely to fly.
As the full-fledged pollen season is approaching, it would be a good idea for those suffering from hay fever to start taking measures early.
