Mexican Soccer Renews with European Signings: Gerardo Arteaga and Jorge Sánchez Return to Liga MX

Liga MX has been renewed with great signings that come from European football, Mexican players who return after having triumphed in leagues in England and Spain such as Andrés Guardado and Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández, while others barely had a few opportunities.

Gerardo Arteaga is Monterrey’s new signing and Cruz Azul begins the paperwork for Jorge Sánchez’s return to Mexican soccer, after a brief stint in European soccer where they did not win titles.

What was Gerardo Arteaga’s career like?

Gerardo Arteaga returns to Mexican soccer at the young age of 25, he debuted with Santos Laguna in 20216 and four years later he migrated to Belgian soccer with KRC Genk, where he has played since 2020 with 234 games, six goals and 16 assists.

Arteaga participated in the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2023 and the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where Mexico remained in the group stage.

Now, the player returns to Mexican soccer as a Bomba signing from Rayados de Monterrey, who will be part of the offense after the departure of Rogelio Funes Mori.

“Player who has demonstrated his quality in Europe and in the Mexican National Team, who will contribute to the defense and attack, in addition to offering internal competition and tactical variants for the team,” the club shared on social networks.

How was Jorge Sánchez’s career through Europe?

Jorge Sánchez debuted in Los Santos Laguna and after debuting in 2016 he stayed for two years until he signed with Club América where he won the 2019 championship.

In 2022 he joined the Ajax team in the Netherlands along with the Mexican Edson Álvarez, although he did not win any title, he remained in Europe with FC Porto for a season.

The Mexican defender was on loan with Porto since the 2023-24 season began after not entering into plans with AJAX.

He played a total of 14 games with the Dragons in all competitions, seven of them in the First League, five in the Champions League and two more in the Portuguese Cups.

Jorge Sánchez’s return to Mexican soccer comes only a year and a half after the sale of América to Ajax. The return of the full-back would imply a market cost of 5 million euros.
