Walloon Environment Minister Céline Tellier was led away from a farmers’ protest by the police on Monday evening because the atmosphere became too grim. Tellier was in Daussoulx wanting to talk to farmers’ organizations about the prevailing dissatisfaction.
Dozens of angry protesters shouted: “Tellier, resign!” Fireworks also exploded near the minister, after which she decided to leave. When activists tried to prevent this, the police intervened. Agents then escorted the minister to another location.
“I came here to listen to them,” the minister told the news channel RTBF. In The evening she stated that she was being chased. “And glass bottles were thrown: there are better evenings,” Tellier added.
Belgian farmers are following the example of their German and French colleagues, who are also campaigning against government policy. The farmers are demonstrating against, among other things, increasingly strict European regulations.
The minister will continue discussions with farmers’ organizations on Tuesday to “find concrete solutions”.
