Libreville, January 28, 2024 (AGP) – The Leopards of DR Congo brought down the Pharaohs of Egypt, after a fairly close penalty shootout (7-8).
After Angola, Nigeria and Guinea, it is the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) which validates, this Sunday evening, its ticket for the quarter-finals of CAN 2023, by eliminating on penalties (7-8 ) Egypt, seven-time winner of the event and unfortunate finalist of the last edition.
The meeting took a long time to settle, certainly due to distrust of each of the two teams. As we approach the half hour mark, the intensity increases a notch and things begin to become clearer.
The Leopards increase the pressure in the Egyptian camp, until the 37th minute, on a quickly played touch on the left wing, Gaël Kakuta goes straight towards the surface and draws up a cross well followed by Meschack who accompanies the ball from the header to open the score (0-1, 37′). A short-lived joy given that the Pharaohs managed to come back to the score 4 minutes later with a penalty converted by Moustafa Mohamed (45′, 1-1).
The score will not change until extra time and the two teams must decide by the fateful penalty shootout. The Egyptian goalkeeper, Gabaski appears as the 9th shooter and sends his shot over the bar. His counterpart from the Congo goal also shows up and transforms yours. (7 tib 8), the leopards qualify and will face Guinea in the quarter.
