In New York, drivers are trying to get around speeding tickets by using fake license plates.
New York City fights as best it can against road crimes, in particular speeding and toll fraud. However, many motorists find an effective solution to avoid fines and sanctions. They use fake license plates. Some of them just hide their tags.
Certainly, police officers are not fooled. If they come across a car whose license plate has been hidden, it is likely that they suspect that fraud is at play. On the other hand, these practices are effective in the face of surveillance cameras installed on the roads of New York. According to Carscoopsthey threw out more than a million potential speeding fines last year.
Drivers hide their license plates to avoid speeding fines in New York
It was a study that highlighted these statistics. In New York, cameras aimed at automatically monitoring compliance speed limits have been introduced for several months. Result, road accidents have decreased since the implementation of this measure, explains this study. On the other hand, these cameras cannot recognize a car with a false or hidden license plate.
However, this practice seems particularly common among New York motorists. They just need to hide their license plate so that the fines cannot be sent to the offenders. In total, there are more than a million potential fines that could not have been applied. Which would represent a total of more than 100 million euros fines avoided.

According to the study in question, these fines not applied represent a total of 22% of speeding offenses over the period from January to June 2023. Among these, a little more than 320 000 cas concern hidden plates. The rest (more than 740,000 cases) involve false license plates, which cannot therefore be recognized by surveillance cameras.
This situation is unlikely to improve in near future. New York City has also noticed that the use of fake license plates has increased significantly since 2019. Thus, it is likely that attempts toavoidance of fines for speeding continue to grow.
