On Saturday, the ship departed on its maiden voyage from Miami, Florida, on a seven-day “island hopping” trip in the Caribbean. A glorious moment for society, but there is still a lot of criticism. Cruise ships do not have the best reputation when it comes to ecology, fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Royal Carribean Group is therefore happy to announce that “Icon of the seas” is powered by 6 dual fuel engines. They run on liquid gas (LNG, liquefied natural gas). According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the use of LNG less greenhouse gases in the air.
According to Royal Carribean Group, “Icon of the seas” is 24 percent more energy efficient than required by the International Maritime Organization. There is fuel technology and a system that converts residual heat into extra energy. The company says every kilowatt of energy used on the ship has been “thoroughly studied for efficiency and emissions reduction.”
