The Benefits of Gargling with Salt Water: Remedies for Sore Throats, Allergies, and Dental Health

Gargling with salt water is a remedy most often used for sore throats, viral respiratory infections such as the common cold, or sinus infections. It can also help with allergies or other minor problems.

Gargling with salt water is quite easy and requires only 2 ingredients – water and salt. It takes very little time to prepare and make, and is completely safe for children over 6 (and anyone who can gargle easily without choking).

What benefits does it have?

Gargling with salt water helps create a barrier that prevents water and harmful pathogens from getting back inside. Thus, viruses and bacteria are blocked, reducing the risk of respiratory infections. At the same time, it also contributes to the relief of inflammation, including the sore throat caused by inflamed tonsils.

Allergies

Because sore throats can also occur with certain allergies, such as pollen or dog and cat hair, gargling with salt water can also help relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of a sore throat due to allergic reactions.

Dental health benefits

Salt water can draw out water and bacteria while protecting the gums, so gargling can be effective in improving gum and dental health. It can also help prevent gingivitis, periodontitis and tooth decay.

In the same way as with other inflammations, gargling with salt water could relieve canker sores or mouth ulcers by reducing the pain and inflammation caused by these sores.

Gargling with salt can help reduce the severity of the infection, whether it is caused by a viral or bacterial infection, ie in colds, flu, strep, mononucleosis.

How to gargle with salt water

Mix about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt per 220 ml of water.

The water is recommended to be warm, as heat can relieve a sore throat more than cold. Additionally, warm water can help dissolve the salt.

But if you prefer cold water, it will not interfere with the effectiveness of the remedy. Gargle with the water using the back of the throat, then pass the water through the mouth and push it between the teeth, then spit it out. It is recommended to gargle at least twice a day.

Be careful if you rinse your mouth several times a day and swallow too much salt water, as it can dehydrate you. Drinking too much salt water can also have health risks, such as calcium deficiency and high blood pressure.
