Struber’s Salzburg team struggles in draw against Poles

Weaker second half

Salzburg switched before the break. Roko Simic replaced Fernando, Daouda Guindo on the left wing Kjaergaard. In addition, Gourna-Douath moved from central defender to his regular position in front of the defense. Behind them, Dedic and Guindo completed a back four alongside central defenders Solet and Ulmer. It didn’t get any better. Because the Poles recorded the first deals. Alexander Schlager was there. The goalkeeper was particularly challenged in the 65th minute when a shot from the second row slipped dangerously after a set piece.

Changes didn’t work

The Salzburg team, who now started in the classic Bulls system with two strikers and a midfield diamond, struggled offensively. They came even less into the danger zone in the second half and now had less control of the game. Despite their defensive orientation, the Poles were closer to the winning goal after the break. Salzburg only threatened to score in the 85th minute: Joker Amankwah Forson narrowly missed from the left position. In the end it was a deserved draw, which could not satisfy Salzburg.

Struber sees progress

“It wasn’t easy today because it felt like the opponent had parked a bus in front of their own goal. We tried again and again to penetrate this wall and created one or two good chances. But in the end we didn’t manage to do that into goals,” says head coach Struber. “There were great moments of counter-pressing, we had the game well under control and were very controlled. It was clear that we had taken important steps forward. And that’s a good thing because it’s about to start.” In the cup against LASK next Saturday and in the championship opener against title rivals Sturm Graz a week later, the Bulls team will have to improve significantly in order to be successful.

Lineup of Salzburg: Alexander Schlager – Andreas Ulmer (73. Bryan Okoh) – Maurits Kjaergaard (46. Daouda Guindo), Mamady Diambou (60. Amankwah Forson), Mads Bidstrup, Amar Dedic (82. Leandro Morgalla) Oscar Gloukh (60. Dijon Cameri), Luke Sucic – Fernando (46. Roko Simic).
