One of the most important events of the year for the young musicians and teachers of the Alfred Kalniņa Cēsu Music High School is the Thanksgiving concert. All students participate in it, teachers, parents of students, high school graduates, supporters are in the audience.
The anxiety before the concert, although it already overwhelmed many when the high school administration chose what to play in the Thanksgiving concert. In order to preserve and develop the tradition, new avenues of content and repertoire are sought every year. This time, film music was selected from both Latvian and well-known foreign films: “Pūt, vēžiņi!”, “Neparastie rivdzinieki”, “Recoil”, “Scent of a Woman”, “James Bond”, “Henry IV”, “Shrek” and others .
“They say – in the beginning there was a name. In the beginning there was sound, because without sound there is no word. And this will be the story of sound from which music is made. You can’t do without it anywhere. Do we pay attention to the music while watching a movie? Let’s look more broadly, listen more deeply and pay attention to what we don’t pay attention to everyday,” said the director of the high school, Vigo Račevskis, and emphasized that the high school supports everyone who creates, learns, encourages, and evaluates in their daily work and holidays. We also invite you to listen to such audible film music, which is an amplifier of emotions, in order to show it as an independent value of musical self-expression.
“I will sing in the choir, I also have to speak, and we will also show what we have learned in the rhythm lessons. There is anxiety, there will be parents,” says Markus Zlakomanov and adds that it was the same last year. Marija Alice Jenča is in her 4th year, she emphasizes that every year the concert is different and they cannot be compared. Marija Alice reveals that she will play in the wooden ensemble, which will play music from the films “Neparastie rīdzinieki” and “Shrek”.
Justine Stilve is a freshman. The young woman admits that settling in such a small town and school was not easy. “I studied at a school with more than 500 students, but here everyone knows each other, there is a family atmosphere. It was also felt when preparing for the concert. If you don’t know something, you can ask anyone, they will tell you, show you,” Justine says. Alice Bartuša and Rūta Jeleviča, also freshmen, emphasize that a lot of time and work was invested to prepare for the concert.
“When the listeners have their own, it’s wonderful, and at the same time, excitement, challenge and surprise,” says Ruta. V. Račevskis admits that the concert is a great opportunity to get out of the framework of the daily learning process, to give freedom to creativity, testing the acquired professional abilities and the level of competence for oneself and cooperation with others.
The director of the thanksgiving concert was Toms Weiss, a graduate of the Alfreda Kalniņa Cēsu Music High School. The music was brought to life on the screens by movie characters, taking the audience into the world of cinema. Applause alternated with ovations. The concert ended, the lights went out, but the applause did not stop. As the listeners recognized, this is a concert that a much wider circle of listeners should hear.
High school graduates Fēliks Siliņš, Evelīna Šimane, Irbe Karlsone and Liena Smirnova also came to the concert. “We have come home, friends are here. We feel like we belong here, everyone greets us dearly,” says Irbe, but Evelina adds that the Thanksgiving concert is an opportunity for everyone to show what we can do. “The feeling of having the whole school on stage is fantastic. And parents, teachers in the hall. It is the most anticipated concert. You can also see for yourself how you have grown, what you have learned in a year, two, four,” says Felix.
