UNRWA Gaza Strip Crisis: Philippe Lazzarini’s Urgent Plea Ignored by Nine Countries

Philippe Lazzarini urges the countries to reconsider, and refers to the critical situation for the population of the Gaza Strip.

The UNRWA management stated on Friday that they have removed several employees and launched an investigation in connection with the case. According to the US authorities, there should be a total of twelve suspects.

– These decisions threaten our ongoing humanitarian work in the region, including and especially in the Gaza Strip, says a statement from Lazzarini.

UNRWA’s communications director Juliette Touma goes even further, and refers to the halt in support as “collective punishment”, according to Al Jazeera.

– Nine countries stop funding UNRWA, in the middle of a war, while the humanitarian needs of people in Gaza become ever deeper. This is really a disgrace to humanity, it is really the last thing the people of Gaza need now, collective punishment, she writes in a post on X/Twitter.

The USA, Germany, Canada, Australia and Italy are among the countries that have stopped financial support.

UNRWA, which is the UN aid organization for Palestinian refugees, has a total of over 30,000 employees who work both in the Palestinian territories and several countries in the Middle East.
