Controversy Surrounding “Before the Holocaust” Game and Emergence of “The Day After” Spoof Version Sparks Outrage Among Players

The zombie apocalypse multiplayer survival game “Before the Holocaust” created by the independent game team Fntastic has caused a lot of controversy among players since its launch due to various technical problems, bugs and differences from the original promotion. Later, the game was officially removed from the Steam platform, and the servers were officially shut down. Players who had already purchased it could also apply for a refund, and disappeared before players’ eyes like a fleeting cloud. But at this moment, a copycat version of “Eve of Catastrophe” suddenly appeared.

Developed by a one-person team with a budget of US$1,500, judging from the development videos currently released, this spoof version of the game is extremely convincing and even looks more polished and professional than the “Before the Holocaust” that players eventually played. Not only that, this trailer also imitates the style of the trailer for “Before”, and at the end of the film, it is revealed that the title of this spoof game is “The Day After” (The Day After).

Eve has already left a stain on video game history. Although it was repeatedly claimed that this would be a massively multiplayer game when it was first revealed, it ended up being an evacuation zombie survival game similar to The Division. Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg of the game’s many problems. Various bugs, unfinished and unavailable content, as well as extremely significant differences from the initial trailer, all triggered a violent backlash from players, eventually leading to the immediate removal of “Before the Holocaust” from the Steam platform not long after it was launched. The development team Fntastic, which had publicly claimed that the game was not a “fraud,” subsequently announced its closure. Just 45 days after its launch, the game servers were officially shut down, and players who purchased the game were able to apply for refunds. This series of turmoil has caused this game to become one of the worst games recognized by players in 2023.

Even so, the development team Fntastic still blamed the failure of the game on the “hate attack operation” launched by bloggers. In any case, the spirit of “Before the Holocaust” may continue to be passed down with a spoof version of the game created by independent developer Crimson. This game uses ready-made materials worth $1,500 and 300 hours of careful creation. With all the bells and whistles added, Crimson has managed to create a playable prototype for Aftermath.

Aftermath has a dynamic weather system, rich environments, a well-functioning item library system, and zombies that can actually be beaten to death. Crimson has no plans to publicly let players download the current version, as the developer is also developing another top-down shooter simultaneously.《Suit For Hire》and the cyberpunk-themed Roguelite game《Ronin 2072》

However, Crimson said he enjoyed working on Aftermath so much that once he completes his current project, he may start working on a cooperative multiplayer zombie survival game. Perhaps this will keep “Before” alive in an unexpected way.
