With the start of the summer timetable, no KLM passenger flights will depart or arrive at Schiphol between midnight and 6 a.m., the company reports. In practice, four intercontinental flights do not land at Schiphol between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., but later in the early morning.

The intervention does not mean the end of night flights at Schiphol. Budget airline Transavia, also part of Air France-KLM, flies at night and in the early morning. There are also cargo flights.

Shrinkage Schiphol

In April 2023, Schiphol presented plans to ban flights at night as much as possible. The focus was on 10,000 fewer night flights. The minister then announced that the number of night flights would have to shrink even further, from 32,000 to 28,700 per year.

The objectives to reduce the number of night flights are part of a long-awaited and much-discussed reduction plan to reduce the number of annual permitted flights at Schiphol from 500,000 to 452,500 from November. A court ruling and resistance from Brussels, the US and Canada previously threw a spanner in the works. As a result, Minister Harbers announced this week that the final shrinkage of Schiphol will not take place this year either.

Nevertheless, there will still be a ‘shrinkage via a detour’ in 2024. Due to a lack of employees, especially in air traffic control, Schiphol cannot supervise half a million takeoffs and landings. This means that ‘only’ 483,000 flights are possible.
