Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) revealed that Indonesia’s astronomical position provides great benefits in observing celestial objects, especially for the southern part of the earth.
Lead Expert Researcher at the BRIN Space Research Center, Thomas Djamaluddin, said that astronomical observations of the southern sky depend on various observatories in the southern hemisphere, one of which is the observatory owned by Indonesia.
“Indonesia can observe the skies of the northern and southern hemispheres. This makes a very important contribution to the development of global astronomy,” he said in a discussion on astronomy and observatories monitored in Jakarta, Friday.
The majority of observatories are in the northern hemisphere, namely America, Europe, Japan and China, which makes global astronomical research currently mostly about the northern sky.
“It becomes difficult to observe the southern sky because the position of the stars is too low. Therefore, observations are needed in the southern sky to see objects in the southern sky,” said Thomas.
“Indonesia is in a very important position because there is relatively little land in the southern hemisphere compared to land in the northern hemisphere,” he added.
The Indonesian government through BRIN is currently building the Timau National Observatory which is located on Mount Timau, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. The Timau National Observatory is equipped with a 3.8 meter telescope which is the largest telescope in Southeast Asia.
