UN Opens Accounts in Russian Banks to Receive Payments and Avoid Sanctions: Reuters

The accounts were opened as early as 2022 and are currently being used to collect mandatory and voluntary payments to the organization, a UN spokesman said. Primarily, the UN receives funds from three Russian banks in the climate finance program.

“The UN Secretariat has opened accounts in Russian banks, which is in line with our policy – to help all member states make payments, without which these countries lose their voting rights,” says the UN representative. It states that “the opening of the accounts was necessary because many other traditional payment channels faced sanctions-related problems.”

According to “Reuters”, here we are talking about the fact that the UN opened the possibility for the sanctioned Russian banks to make payments. The UN also opened an account in an unsanctioned bank and for the first time started accepting payments in rubles.

In total, the UN has already received 114 thousand dollars from three Russian banks that are members of the financial initiative UNEP FI. However, it is known that more than ten Russian banks, including “Gazprombank” and others, have joined the UN responsible banking principles program.
