Today, two years after her election, Roberta Metsola has led, with the European Parliament, several delicate debates and reforms: migration pact, Green deal, regulations to respond to criticism after the corruption scandals within European institutions.
Faced with the growing discontent of the agricultural world in various member countries, Roberta Metsola says she is understanding: “I understand their fears. We must not only have a dialogue with farmers, but we must recognize their role in our environment.” She recalls that parliament received delegations of farmers, but also, during the pandemic, their role was highlighted. “We have priorities on the climate, she continues. We were ready to make difficult decisions, but we have a responsibility to speak with citizens, and above all to limit the social and economic impacts on businesses and also on farmers.“
For Roberta Metsola, “we must not go beyond the limit that citizens can accept as legislation“It is the will, she adds, of the Belgian presidency which will propose an industrial plan, and which will try to limit the impacts on individuals. “We must appease the anger of farmers; our job and our responsibility is to understand their fears.“
